What is a Repeat Prescription

It is a prescription you can get without having to see your doctor but first of all, your doctor will decide whether it is safe for you to have this medication regularly without being seen.  These items are listed on the right hand side of your repeat prescription computer slip.

There will be a limit to the number of issues after which your doctor will want to see you to review your treatment.

Only order what you need.  Over £24 million of unwanted medicines per year are thrown away in this area alone.

What happens to the request slip?

  1. Requests are processed by a designated receptionist
  2. The request is checked to see if it is due, including an over use or under use check
  3. If it is due, the prescription is generated and set aside for your doctor to sign
  4. If it is not due, your doctor will leave a note in reception which will be given to you when you call in to collect your prescription
  5. All prescriptions are passed to your doctor to check before signing.  This takes time and will be attended to AFTER surgery
  6. Once signed, the prescriptions are sorted and filed in order ready for collection by the local pharmacy

Please respect the following:

  1. We are unable to enter into correspondence over the internet regarding repeat prescriptions, this is to protect your confidentiality.
  2. Staff who receive your request have been trained to issue prescriptions, but they do not have indepth medical knowledge.  Please ensure you provide as much detail from your repeat prescription as possible.
  3. The practice cannot be held responsible for any delay of your request, nor any technical failure of the system.  It is the patient's responsibility to allow enough time when ordering prescriptions.
  4. Please do not phone to confirm your prescription is ready as this blocks our telephone lines and generates a large amount of work for reception staff.

Items not on your repeat list

Please remember you cannot order items that are not on your repeat medication list via the online ordering system.  Items such as the contraceptive pill, aniI-depressant medication and new medication that doctors have introduced to your regime will not appear on your repeat list. If you would like a medication that is not on your repeat list you can place a "special request" by completing an order sip which is available in reception.  A doctor will check your records and issue a prescription if appropriate.  You may, however, be asked to make an appointment with a GP if they think you should be seen first.

Please allow three full working days for prescriptions to be processed and remember to take weekends and bank holidays into account.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip. Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
